Male Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus)
We are staying with our friend Kathy on the outskirts of a town called Newtown Square. This post is a collection of the most interesting butterflies I saw on our trip. The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail was one of the most dramatic and interesting. A male is shown above and the much more colourful female is shown below.
There is also a very striking dark form of the female.
This astonishing creature is the fabulous Spicebush Swallowtail (Papilio troilus)
I also saw a female Indra Swallowtail (Papilio indra, sub species kaibabensis).
All of the above were seen on plants in the garden of Kathy's next door neighbour (who had planted with butterflies in mind) or the house across the road (where there was the trusty Buddleia).
Other sightings included this Aphrodite Fritillary (Speyeria aphrodite) and
The remaining sightings included a Zabulon Skiper (Planes zabulon) ...
... a Cramer's Silver-drop Skipper (Epargyreus clarus) ...
... and a Queen Alexandra's Sulphur (Colias alexandra).
And of course a Monarch.
