Walking in the country: Walled towns

I have always enjoyed enjoyed walled towns. There is nothing finer than walking the complete circuit of walls around a town like Lucca. This page prsents an evolving list of walled towns with links to those described in my blog. The principal source for the list below is a very interesting paper by David Bruce and Oliver Creighton of Exeter University entitled "Contested identities: The dissonant heritage of European town walls and walled towns", available here. I have added various others from my experience and research. I haven't resolved the definitional question: how much remaining wall does a town have to have to be regarded as a walled town? Southampton is probably the most marginal entry in this list.

I would welcome additional suggestions.
